The effigy Burn

A celebration of life, community, and impermanence.

The effigy burn is more than a fire. It’s a celebration of life - of what it means to be human, living in the moment, and connected with others.

It’s a metaphor for how an idea can spark a movement, how collective effort can create something bigger than any of us, and how existence itself is brilliant and temporary, lasting only for a moment in time.

Standing before it at night, watching wood become flame and structure burn away. You feel it, you’re part of something larger, something shifting and alive.

You’re alive. We’re alive.

Let’s burn bright together.

What is the Effigy?

In the heart of Underland, the effigy stands as more than a structure. It’s a communal symbol, built by our people, for our people.

It’s our gathering point, our moment of celebration of being alive and being human.

When we come together to build the effigy, we are creating a shared act of expression.

When we burn it, we are collectively releasing old patterns, embracing impermanence, and igniting the spark of now.

A little history...

The concept of a burnable effigy has roots in ancient times and has more recently been reignited in festival culture, most notably at Burning Man, where a human-shaped form was first set alight in 1986 as a spontaneous expression of community and fire.

Since then, across regional burns and echo-events, the effigy has evolved into a large-scale ritual of creation, transformation and release. As one regional event puts it:

"The Effigy… represents the culmination of a year’s worth of collaborative effort, creativity, and personal reflection… a community creation that is ultimately released in a fiery spectacle."

At Underland, we honour that lineage - while making it our own: local community, local energy, local celebration.

Underland is what we create together.
