The structure glows softly, filled with messages, photos, and items left throughout the event.
A flame touches its edge, and the quiet begins.
You feel the heat, the weight of shared emotion, the strange peace that comes when words and memories turn to light.
Some cry. Some breathe deeply. Some just watch.
The structure falls and the flames fade. Something subtle shifts in us.
We’ve shared release. We’ve witnessed transformation. We’ve made space for what comes next.
It’s a moment that can only be experienced, never captured.
That’s the gift of the Temple.
What is the Temple?
The Temple is a sacred space within Underland, a place built by the community, for the community.
While the Effigy celebrates life and our collective energy, the Temple invites stillness. It’s where we remember, reflect, and let go. It’s a structure of intention, a canvas for our stories, our grief, our gratitude, and our hopes.
During the event, people visit the Temple to write messages, leave mementos, meditate, or simply sit in silence. It becomes a vessel for the things we carry, the words unspoken, the memories we hold dear, and the weight we’re ready to release.
A little history...
The tradition of the Temple began at Burning Man in 2000 when artist David Best built the first “Temple of the Mind.” It was meant as an art piece, but when a friend of the builders passed away during the event, the community transformed it into a place of mourning and meaning.
That night, thousands stood together in silence as the Temple burned, watching their messages, losses, and love, rise into the night sky.
Since then, every Burn across the world has built its own version of the Temple, each unique but always sharing that purpose: a communal ritual of release and reflection.
At Underland, we continue that lineage in our own way: a space to honour the full spectrum of being human, including joy, loss, gratitude, forgiveness, and transformation.
