Volunteer opportunities

We welcome all contributions - great and small.

If you want to contribute in some way, but are unsure where you might fit, please email crew@commonarts.org.au for a conversation with our friendly and welcoming crew wrangling team.

Or fill in the Volunteer EOI Form below, and we will contact you about your interests.

Centre Camp Crew

Shhhh... Centre Camp crew is one of the best volunteer gigs on the paddock! From 10am - midnight Centre Camp crew hang out at the space, provide general information, assist workshop hosts to set up, keep the space tidy, chat to people and be a point of contact with Centre Camp Lead if required.

Centre Camp shifts are 4 hours in duration, and crew are rostered in pairs wherever possible. Shifts are scheduled between 10am and midnight, and we will try to accommodate crew preferences for times/days if we can.

If you have spare time before or after Underland, and you want to spend an extra day on-site, Centre Camp crew are needed to help with set up and pack down of the basic decor and furniture. This is an easy and fun way to extend your Underland experience.

Fire safety

Our fire safety crew ensure that anything to do with fire is done safely.

This involves checking any gas cylinders to ensure they are safe to use; monitoring burn barrels and flame effects on art installations; monitoring fire enclave and performers; raking up combustible debris; helping to coordinate slashing and constructing fire breaks; and chasing embers during fire activities, particularly during the burning of the Effigy and the Temple.

Gate crew

Our gate crew are there at the entrance to the event, scanning people’s tickets, giving them a wristband, and giving them the low down on Underland.

We are currently looking for a Gate lead. Email crew@commonarts.org.au if you can help out with this important role!

Greeters

Greeters are the welcoming face of Underland, welcoming participants as they arrive and providing them with information and guidance. They hand out important resources, give people a warm entry to the event, and educate people about the event's ethos.

This is vital for acculturation and ensuring people can meaningfully transition into the event.

Leave No Trace (LNT)

The LNT team ensures that Underland keeps getting invited back by landholders and local communities alike! We do that by ensuring that the paddock is as clean of rubbish as when we found it, every year.  We educate, inform and entertain Burners on how to minimise and manage their MOOP (Matter Out of Place). So that means we need folks to make signs, write promotional material and join in on any other initiatives where you are needed.

And then, after everyone has packed up and headed home, we conduct the MOOP Sweep. We record what and where the remaining MOOP is and map it, so the community can see what got left behind where. But there is usually very little MOOP and you are supplied with all the necessary gear for your shift, plus there are bonuses to be had for the legends that are kind and stay behind!

Rangers

Rangers are members of the community who have dedicated some of their time to help keep everyone safe.

They roam the event, keeping an eye on things, handing out essentials like sunscreen and water, spreading any important messages, and otherwise just hanging out. They are equipped with radios so if something does need attention, they are able to get a quick response to their location.

We are currently looking for a Ranger lead. Email crew@commonarts.org.au if you can help out with this important role!

Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is a bridge between Rangers and emergency services.

It offers a safe, comfortable space if people feel overwhelmed, lost or lonely; if things get a bit too much; or if people want some safe-partying tips.

Everyone is welcome at Sanctuary to take a breather and sit down with a cup of tea and chat with one of the sober and caring Underlanders on duty.

Sandfolk

Our Sandfolk maintain safety inside the inner perimeter of the effigy and temple burns. They act as inner perimeter rangers and stop any participants who attempt to enter the burn circle after the burn perimeter is put in place.

S.P.A.M.

The SPAM crew build and maintain the foundation of the event -- roads, power, structures, toilets* and also support the burnable art crews.
It's a crew for people who like to be busy and working, solving challenges that appear.
SPAM is the first to arrive and the last to leave, so if you want more time in Paradise, then join the crew!

* We're hoping to transfer to a dedicated sanitation team in 2026
